Accession Data:

Siamanthus siliquosus K. Larsen & J. Mood

  • Common Name:
  • Family: Zingiberaceae Lindley

  • Country of Origin: Thailand
  • Habitat: evergreen forest at about 800 m

  • Description: Rhizomatous herb up to 150 cm, forming compact clumps.

Siamanthus is a spectacular species in flower with each new stem producing a large inflorescence with many attractive yellow and red flowers. Late afternoon observation of open flowers shows a large, sweet nectar drop at the mouth of the corolla. At the same time pollen is very abundant and easily separated from the thecae. No pollinators have been seen, but bird pollination is most likely.

This species is only known from the type locality which is not precisely stated, where it has a very small range and presumably population (probably under 1,000 mature individuals). Based on the small extent of occurrence (under 30 km2), a potential continuing decline in the extent and quality of the habitat due to deforestation which would make the area a single location, this species could potentially be listed as Critically Endangered. 4
