Accession Data:

Sarmienta scandens (J.D. Brandis ex Molina) Pers.

  • Common Name: Medallita
  • Family: Gesneriaceae Dumort.
  • Synonym(s): Urceolaria scandens J.D. Brandis ex Molina

  • Country of Origin: southern Chile

  • Culture: Of the three southern Chilean gesneriads this one is probably the easiest. We grow it in our "cloud forest and maritime climate" room. The room cools every night down to at least 16C in the summer, and we try to keep it from getting above 30C during the day. That said, this one is not as heat sensitive as Asteranthera ovata. S. scandans can also take drying better than the other two species, but has proven to be fairly resistant to overwatering issues as well.2
