Accession Data:

Sinningia canescens (C. Martius) Wiehler

  • Common Name: Brazilian Edelweiss
  • Family: Gesneriaceae Dumort.

  • Country of Origin: Brazil

  • Description: [syn. Rechsteineria leucotricha, Sinningia leucotricha]

  • Culture: When the foliage dies back and the plant enters dormancy during the winter season, withhold water and only slightly mist the soil surface to keep the tuber from drying out too much. Resume regular watering, keeping the plant lightly moist, when the new leaves start to show. Sinningia canescens can survive a short drought but will NOT recover from drowning and rotting. When watering, water the soil and not the plant, as the plant is prone to crown rot and fungal issues on the foliage. Increase pot size only if completely necessary, and only by the smallest increment possible. Avoid deep pots, as they hold too much moisture.
