Broussonetia papyrifera (L.) Venten.

  • Common Name: Paper Mulberry
  • Family: Moraceae Link

  • Country of Origin: E. Asia - China. Occasionally naturalized in S.E. Europe
  • Habitat: Thickets, mountain ravines and forests.

  • Description: The species is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. The staminate inflorescence is a catkin up to 8 centimeters long with fuzzy male flowers. The pistillate inflorescence is a spherical head up to about 2 centimeters wide with greenish female flowers trailing long styles.5 This accession is a pistillate (female) specimen.
  • Uses: The inner bark of this plant was beaten and the principal ingredient in making tapa cloth or kapa in ancient Polynesia. You can watch a short video here.
  • Culture: Moist soil, typically pruned to maintain as a small shrub although plant can attain 50' in the wild.
