Jaltomata quipuscoae Mione & S. Leiva

  • sect. Modillonia

  • Common Name:
  • Family: Solanaceae Juss.

  • Country of Origin: Peru: Arequipa (endemic)

  • Description: A newly described species from Peru producing red floral nectar.

Much branching, perennial herb to 70 cm, the younger branches green with a dense pubescence of gland-tipped finger hairs, the older branches brown-purple, lacking lenticles. Flowers solitary, corolla purple, broadly crateriform and 5-lobed, nectar pools on the corona, lacking radial staminal-corolla thickenings, stigma punctiform, mature fruits whitish.1

Image #1: Two flowers of J. quipuscoae grown in the same greenhouse at the same time. On the left, during the pistillate phase the corolla begins to turn purple. On the right, hermaphroditic phase flowers have turned purple. Nectar darkens with age too, appearing orange-red during the pistillate phase (usually day one) and then darkening to purple. Units are mm.2

  • Culture: Does best when allowed to dry slightly between watering.
