  • Description: The genus Heteromeles is comprised of this single species, closely allied to the tropical genus Photinia. It is a long lived shrub or small tree that sprouts from an underground burl after a fire. Leathery, evergreen leaves are sharply toothed along the margins.
    A common constituent of Chaparral vegetation although typically found on less harsh, more mesic sites.
    It is unusual among chaparral shrubs in that is flowers during the summer. The perigynous flowers are borne in flat-topped or convex terminal inflorescences. The fruits are orange pomes 0.5 to 1cm in diameter ripening in late fall into early winter and are bird dispersed.
