This species is purported to be a myrmecophytic 'ant-house' with the leaves arranged to channel water away from the center of the plant which is in sharp contrast to other 'tank' bromeliads which collect water in the leaf bases.

Culture: These are tank-type bromeliads, and attention should be given to flushing the tanks. Give them moderate to bright light, protect from wind damage and feed monthly with 20-20-20 fertilizer at half strength. They may be either potted or mounted.
