  • Description: This slender-branched species develops a short trunk topped by a bushy rounded crown and reaches 15 ft (4.5 m) in height. The young stems are reddish and slightly hairy, turning brown later. The oval to slightly oblong leaves are 2–4 in (5–10 cm) long, shiny dark green above and slightly hairy below. The rich purple to violet, satiny flowers, 3 in (8 cm) wide with purple stamens, are borne singly or in small groups. The flower buds are large, reddish and hairy.
  • Culture: They prefer full sun and do best in light soil with added organic matter and a slightly acidic to neutral pH. They should be kept moist during the growing season.
