Eucommia ulmoides Oliver

  • Common Name: Gutta-percha Tree
  • Family: Eucommiaceae

  • Country of Origin: China
  • Habitat: Mountainous regions

  • Description: This is usually a slender tree to 50 ft (15 m) high of open habit with furrowed, gray bark; the crown becomes broader and more rounded with age. The shiny, green leaves are narrow and pointed. Male and female flowers, both inconspicuous, are carried on different trees and the winged fruit, rather like the ‘keys’ on an ash, are seldom seen on planted trees. This is a vigorous tree, though not an especially ornamental one.

  • Uses: One of the 50 Fundamental Herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine. This herb is taken directly from the bark of Eucommia ulmoides. Used to detox the kidneys by helping with blood circulation while also alleviating discomfort from the lower back and muscular cramps. Usage has also been noted with hypertension and bleeding disorders.
