Lantana montevidensis (K. Spreng.) Briq.

  • Common Name: Weeping Lantana
  • Family: Verbenaceae J. St-Hil.

  • Country of Origin: S. Trop. America

  • Description: [syn Lantana sellowiana]

The slender, weak stems of this trailing species mound up into a dense mass making it a wonderful plant for a ground cover or low hedge. It grows to a height of 18–36 in (45–90 cm) and a spread of 6 ft (1.8 m) or often much more, with small, neat, closely-veined dark green leaves. Throughout the year, but particularly in summer, it bears bright mauve-pink flowerheads, each with a yellow eye. A white-flowered cultivar has recently appeared and can make an attractive combination planted with the pink.

  • Uses:
  • Culture: These plants prefer fertile, well-drained soil and full sun. Plants in containers should be top-dressed annually in spring and watered well when in full growth, less at other times. Tip prune young growth to promote a bushy habit and propagate from cuttings in summer or from seed in spring. They are generally little affected by pests, but check regularly for white fly and spider mite.
